How to Build Vegetable Garden on Concrete

This is the best gardening choice for those who have no yard space or backyard. Even if your available lawn space was weedy, packed with hard clay, full of stones, or made of concrete—your vegetable garden will still be easy to build.

The first thing to do is to find for a place. And you chose the front lawn as the future site of your vegetable garden. Just make sure that this spot receives 5 hours or more of sun every day.

Next, gather your materials. With the use of your bare hands and some extra help from the family, collect the following:

1. old cardboards, boxes, old wool carpet, jute sacks, pieces of wood or plywood;
2. broken branches, logs, old planks of wood, loose bricks or rocks; and
3. washed seaweeds, tree barks, fallen leaves, hay or alfalfa, loose straw or cut grasses.

These items have to be bought from the plant nursery or other sources:

1. vegetable seeds and black seedling bags; and
2. commercial fertilizer or organic fertilizer such as well-composted manure from chicken, horse, cow or sheep.

You can compost your own organic fertilizer from kitchen wastes. You can create your own seedling bags from old newspapers.

The whole process of laying out your vegetable garden takes only one morning, if you have all the materials on hand.

Procedure:

1. Measure the size of your plot. The length could be as long as your lawn, but the width should not be wider than one meter. Put about 10-inch or more high ‘fence’ made of logs, branches, planks, bricks or rocks. The idea is to raise the garden plot from the ground.
2. Even the ground. Remove humps or fill up gaps with sand or soil. Place the first layer, consisting of old cardboards, jutes, non-synthetic old carpet, and old plywood.
3. Spread the pre-soaked newspapers to fully cover the first layer. The pages should overlap so that no ray of sunlight can slip underneath where stray weed seeds may grow.
4. Lay a 5-inch high of straw, hay or alfalfa, grasses, leaves, barks and seaweeds (thoroughly washed to remove salt). Distribute evenly and drizzle with water until wet, not soaking wet.
5. Pour a 1-inch high of organic fertilizer all over. If no organic variety was not available, sprinkle commercial fertilizer instead.
6. Place another layer of straw or hay or leaves. You can pre-soak these materials so that you will not have to water.
7. Top-up with another inch high of compost or dust with commercial fertilizer.

Creating A Business Plan

Have you been thinking about starting up your own business? Do you think that you have a great idea for a business, but are unsure of how to get started? One of the first things that you will need to do is to create a good business plan. A business plan is detailed map of your plans; what they are and how you plan to go about achieving them. You can use this plan for many things, including showing it to potential investors, dealing with suppliers, getting a loan or attracting key employees to your business.

A business plan should be detailed and is often compared to as a map, detailing the entire route of your venture. When writing a business plan, you will need to be clear and concise, so that it is easy to read by the people you are targeting. You should leave nothing to chance, and should make sure that it is an achievable and complete outline. You will need to include a complete description of the business that you have in mind including what it is, what your product is, where it will be located and so on. You will also need to include any marketing and financial information which will also need to be in clear detail. When you are writing your business plan, make sure that it is neither too long nor too short. People will quickly lose interest if there are too many papers to wade through, and vice-versa will think that you have not spent enough time on it if it is too short.

How to Start a Vegetable Garden

By this time, you just had finished building the raised garden plot. Straws, especially when not pre-soaked while submerged in water, are not absorbent. You have ample time to set up your seedlings.

And the next thing to do is to prepare the vegetable seedlings that you are going to plant on your mix through process of transplanting.

It is better to transplant seedlings rather than use direct seeding. Seeds may sprout anywhere or can get lost in the hay mix. It would be such as waste because the plot you built is rich with organic materials and appropriate for intensive gardening. This means more plants can be placed closely to each other and still grow healthy together.

Before you buy seeds, you must read the information at the back of the packet. Follow the indications about the best months to plant certain vegetables. Do not plant winter vegetables during summer, and vice versa. However, there are vegetables that you can grow all year round even inside the house.

Seeds need water, air and warmth. Germinate your vegetable seeds in shallow containers filled with light and slightly loamy soil that holds moisture. Most vegetable seeds germinate at about 6 to 20 days; and others in 4 to 5 weeks.

For easy transplanting, germinate your seeds in trays that have individual pot-like spaces for each seed so that seedlings will be pulled out without destroying any of the baby roots. Use peat or fibrous planting mix.

Choose high-quality seeds even if a bit expensive to ensure a healthy yield from your vegetable garden.

Keeping Your Back Healthy

Back pain is one of the most common reasons that people are off work. It can be very painful and may last anywhere from a couple of days up to six weeks. Main causes of back pain are bad posture and torn or stretched ligaments or muscles. Although people suffering from back problems typically want to lie down and avoid moving, this is generally the worst thing that you can do. It is important to keep active, as keeping still will only make your muscles weaker and more painful in the long run.

The best thing that you can do for back pain is to keep moving and take painkillers if necessary. Strengthening your leg, back and stomach muscles is a great way to keep your back in good working order, and you can do this by taking exercise classes and remaining active. Yoga and Pilates are just two great techniques to keeping your back healthy.

When at work, it is important to maintain your posture. If you slouch when sitting at a desk all day, this may aggravate your back. Sitting comfortably, as well as frequently getting up to stretch are important to avoid back aches. There are many simple things that you can do to keep your back healthy, and doing them will ensure that you do not suffer the agony of back pain.

Travelling With Pets

If you have a pet, you know how hard it can be to go away on holiday without bringing him with you. You may feel like a holiday just would not be complete without your dog or cat accompanying you. But is it possible to fly your beloved pet out with you and if so how much will it cost you? Since the introduction of the pet travel scheme, bringing your animal on holiday with you has become so much easier.

There are many airlines that adhere to the pet travel scheme, so doing a little bit of research will more than likely allow you to visit your dream destination with your pet. The scheme allows dogs, cats and ferrets to readily travel, as well as rabbits, fish, birds and various rodents. If you are planning a holiday with your pet, you will typically want to get everything organised several months before your holiday. The animal will be able to travel back into the UK without the six month quarantine period after having visited certain countries abroad.

To get your pet set up under the pet travel scheme, he will need to be outfitted with a microchip, as well as undergo rabies vaccination and blood tested.

Getting Fit Without Spending Money

walking-kids-and-dog.jpgNow that the economy seems to continuously declining, it is important that our fitness should remain stable. However, we do not have to go on paying for our gym membership if we wanted to cut that particular cost from the budget.

Getting fit does not mean getting yourself dead-tired on those exercise machines. Unless you’re a masochist, you wouldn’t enjoy having those muscle pains everyday of the week. So, chances are, you’d find yourself prevaricating to postpone your next visit to the gym.

Stop going to the gym, by all means. Acquire fitness through making some new changes in your lifestyle. Be vigorous when doing your daily pursuits like washing the laundry, cooking meals, cleaning the house, walking your dog, and many more.

Lifestyle fitness is as simple as living your life to the fullest. Why ride the elevator when taking the stairs will be good for your heart? Why drive the car when you can walk to the nearest grocery shop? By not burning your fuel will be good for your pocket.

Take your dog with you so that you’ll enjoy walking more. Along the way, you may meet some old friends who you haven’t seen and talked to for sometime. Nothing beats the chance of throwing in some social moments while exercising yourself and your dog.

Get fit without money involved by putting some enthusiasm on some boring chores. You will enjoy cutting the grass or weeding in the garden once you take notice of how much your body sweat—without paying any gym bills.

Mental And Physical Well-Being Go Hand In Hand

Well-beingOur mental health is vital to our well-being; and more often than not, being mentally well will prevent a lot of physical illnesses from occurring. Mental and physical health often go hand-in-hand; with one triggering the other. When we start to worry and fret about things, our bodies often become affected, and we may get ill as a side effect. Making an effort to stay psychologically healthy is therefore very important, and there are several things that you can do to ensure that you stay that way.

One of the most important things to do is to make sure that you do not bottle things up. Keeping problems and worries to yourself is one of the worst things that you can do, and will often trigger severe side effects including illness, insomnia and headaches. If there is something on your mind; talk to a friend or a family member to get advice. If you do not have someone to talk to, enlisting the help of a professional is an option, or simply writing things down to get it off your chest.

To stay mentally healthy, you need to also keep physically fit. Make sure that you eat a well-balanced diet, and that you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. You will want to stay active, and try to do at least a little bit of exercise every day. Spend time outdoors as much as you can. Walking in a park or on the beach is great not only for your physical well-being but for your state of mind as well. Spend and enjoy time with friends and family, and make sure that you also enjoy some quality time on your own

Best Places to Spend Camping Holidays

Both children and adults love to roast marshmallows on bonfires while sitting under starry nights. The atmosphere of adventure is heightened when they also sleep inside sleeping bags or camping tents. But why suffer back pains from sleeping on hard grounds? There are fabulous camping sites that offer both the comfort and the adventure of camping.

Rambagh Palace. Patterned after a 16th-century Mughal encampment, these two spa suite tents are found in Jaipur’s Taj Hotels. Guests will experience India’s royalty camping ways when they stay inside billowing pavilions, furnished with handwoven carpets, royal pennants, and love swings made from salvaged shesham wood. Designers are husband-and-wife Amit and Shalini Gehlot.

One & Only Le Saint Geran. This is a beach teepee (erected on a Mauritius Beach) with the height of 17 feet and decorated with ribbons, beads, and embroidered designs so that it will look like a glistening jewelry box in the sands–which is intended by the designer Alice Temperley. Guests will experience cookouts by the tent, even roasting marshmallows. Food is served by a liveried butler.

Miraval Tucson Resort & Spa. Located in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, guests are pampered with spa treatments in any one of six new tents, which are designed by Clodagh. The tents are surrounded by paloverde trees in a botanical garden and are furnished with stone flooring, acacia bench, and walled with saguaro and ocotillo cacti.

Lemarti’s Camp. This is a 5-tent camp located on platforms above a river bend near Kenya’s Laikipia Plateau. The tents are made of hand-stitched loomed cotton, and are furnished with wooden tables and beds. Interior decorations consist of crocodile skulls, elephant shoulder blades, and clubs and walking sticks with bead works.

Banjaar Tola. This a safari lodge with 18 tent suites, located in the midst of bamboo forests of Madhya Pradesh, which is just a 4-hour drive from Jabalpur. Designed by Architect Sanjay Prakash, each tent suite has bamboo floors, heated pools, and Chattisgarh artworks.

Banyan Tree Maldives Madivaru. This is the most cosseting tented property at present. Set on a private island in the Maldives, where only 18 guests can stay at a time. The rooms are formed in 3 conjoined tents located near the lagoon, and are furnished with king-sized beds and a bathing pavilion with claw-foot bath tub. A butler and a massage therapist are on call to serve the guests.

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle. Found in Thailand’s Golden Triangle and designed by Bill Bensley, these 15 tents are decorated with local metal craftworks and antiques such as old compass, rifles, primitive tools for fishing.

Your Own Backyard. It will not matter where you go camping, as long as your whole family is camping together. Set up a tent inside your own backyard and lit a small bonfire in front so everyone can roast their own marshmallows. If you did not have a backyard, then go to the nearest beach or riverbanks. You don’t have to buy your own camping gears because there are places where you can rent them out. Don’t forget to bring big jugs of clean water, medicines, and batteries.

Week 21 Weighin and Gastric Bypass Surgery Update

Weight: 257 lbs. (three lbs dropped)
This past week and next week I have to follow a strick diet in preparation for gastric bypass surgery - liquid protein drinks and a few plain veggies ONLY. The day before the surgery only clear liquids (broth, jello, water, crystal light) are allowed.

My surgery is scheduled for Aug. 6. I should be home the next day and once I feel better I plan on updating my progress and posting more information about gastric bypass surgery as I recover for the next four weeks and beyond as I continue the journey to health and improving my life.

On last week’s weighin post I got a comment scolding me for having gastric bypass surgery, the commentor was confused and implied I shouldn’t be having it. I decided to post my reply here in case there are others who feel the same way.

Here is my response: it may surprise you but yes I very well know all the basic diet guidelines that you speak of - however, NOT every one is the same and a LOT depends on age and health conditions - what applies to a 20 or 30 year old who has under 50 lbs to lose does not necessarily work for a person over 50 with a few health problems and over 150 lbs to lose. I appreciate your concern - however I do not need scolding or lecturing by any one - especially since I am under a doctor and nutritionists care.

Every doctor and nutritionist I have work with has reviewed my eating plan for the past few years and approved it - 800 caloires is just about right for me and it is also the suggested diet for any one who has gastric bypass surgery.

I’m not sure how much medical knowledge you have about congestive heart failure or other medical training - but my doctors and I KNOW how my body responds to too much fluid. One of the problems with having congestive heart failure is the body retains a huge amount of water and can not process fluids well - often requiring diuretics and watchfulness on how much fluid is taken in.

There is a lot more to weight loss then just what can be learned in a few diet books or gym training class. Not everyone can do the usual steps and have it work for them.

Also if you bothered to read earlier posts or checked out the weight summary page you would have seen that I started this journey with a weight over 300 lbs.

So I’m NOT having gastric bypass at 260 lbs - I was over 300 lbs and part of the requirements to have the surgery is to lose weight every single month for six months before the surgery. My starting weight and BMI was well over the acceptable limit and qualified me for the bypass surgery - but add to that my health problems and I was definitely a qualified candidate even at 260 lbs - because I am still morbidly obese.

The insurance company and the gastric bypass clinic I go to have very very strict guidelines for approval - I would not have been able to convince them to do the surgery unless I qualified.

I truly appreciate the support and concern of family, friends and my readers here. However, I hope that most understand that the decision to have gastric bypass surgery was made after years of consideration, a lot of rearch and soul searching. I made the decision to have the surgery in order to improve my health. I know some folks will never “approve” or understand - but my response to them is, I don’t need your approval or understanding - I need to do what is best for me and my life. Gastric bypass surgery is not the easy way out - it is a tool that can help, but all the work involved in losing over 150 lbs has to be done by me and me alone. To those who want to criticize, scold, or scorn - I suggest doing your homework first and learn about gastric bypass. Bottomline making the decision to have this surgery is a personal one and the only people who I feel I need to consult are my doctors and my immediate family.

I want to thank everyone for all the support and positive energy from my readers. I welcome questions and concerns and will be happy to answser them. However, I only ask that before you lecture or scold you take the time to realize that you do not know me personally, nor do you have access to my medical records. I apologize if this post sounds a bit harsh, that is not my intent. I simply want folks to understand that the decision to have gastric bypass surgery is the right one for me and it was not made on a whim, but was made after many, many years of informed deliberation with doctors and family members.

Gastric Bypass Surgery Tomorrow

In just 24 hours a new chapter in my journey to health will begin. I have finally completed all the hoops I had to jump through for the past six months in preparation for gastric bypass surgery, which is scheduled to tomorrow. I will spend an overnight at the hospital and will be home by Friday afternoon.

These past two weeks have been difficult because the hunger has been extreme. The pre-op diet is ONLY liquid protein drinks and plain veggies. Today I am only allowed clear liquids - broth, sugar free jello, water, crystal light. But it is only one more day and I’m moving forward with a positive attitude and energized to begin the next chapter in my life to get healthy.

My last office weighin pre-op was this past Monday- weight: 253 lbs. A total off 55 lbs lost on the office scale over the last six months of preparation for gastric bypass surgery. The staff was very impressed and pleased with my progress. (My starting weight on the office scale was 308 lbs)

I plan on continuing to update over the next four weeks during recovery and beyond on my progress. I also plan to include more details and information on the whole process and preparation for the surgery, for those who are interested in finding out more about it. Also please feel free to ask questions if want to know more about gastric bypass surgery, I’ll do my best to answer them

I have researched gastric bypass surgery for years and the surgeon I am going to is the best. This decision was made after a lot of thought and soul searching and I know it is right for me. It is not a magic bullet or quick fix - all the work that goes into losing a lot of weight (over 150 lbs) still has to be done by me. Gastric bypass surgery is a tool that can help, but only if I put in the work required.

My reason for deciding to have the surgery is to improve my heath. Due to my congestive heart failure and rhumatoid arthritis since the age of 2 which casues a great deal of joint pain I have never been able to do much physically, which means I gain weight extremely quickly if I eat much over 800 calories a day. Being morbidly obese and over 150 lbs overweight only makes these health conditions worse and can lead to even more health problems.

I know some folks won’t understand and some even feel it is the easy way out. All I can say to those people is they obviously do not have all the information about gastric bypass surgery, they don’t know me very well, and they are not in a position to make decisions for me or know my personal health issues and life experiences.

Most folks though have been very supportive and I truly appreciate their good throughts and positive energy. Of course, family and friends have the usual concerns about surgery. All surgery does have some risk, however, gastric bypass surgery is very safe. Also the professional staff and surgical team that I am going to are extremely qualified and have over five years of experience and an excellant record.

These past few months have been a whirlwind with all the preparations for surgery I had to do. Work has been absolutely overwhelmingly hectic because I have had to train someone to do my job while I’m on sick leave for a month recovering while at the same time get the huge workload of stuff done that crosses my desk. All this has totally consumed most of my mental and emotional energy, leaving little left over for other things and unfortunately that included blogging. However, my readers here mean a lot to me and thank you all for your continued support of my little blog. I truly hope I can get back to blogging more reqularly over the next few weeks once I recover a bit and hopefully life will be a bit calmer.

Heirloom technology: Yazd's windcatchers

yazd-windcatcher-opener.jpg

When I visited the 3000-year-old city of Yazd, Iran, the old school technology I was most fascinated by is the windcatcher. Seen atop many a building in this arid city with an annual rainfall of 2.4 inches and summer temps frequently pushing 104°F, these towers are the predecessors to the swamp cooler. Basically, the wind shafts on the rooftops have directional ports, and only the one facing away from the incoming wind is left open. The wind gets sucked in and pushed down over water below, and the cooled air is circulated through the house. In the ancient homes I saw, the room at the bottom of the wind shaft had a little pool of water and the sides of the room were often built-in brick benches covered with carpet, where the dwellers would spend the hottest part of the day.

windcatchers.jpgpool-room-windcatcher-yazd.jpg

The city of Yazd has an underground water management system called the qanat that taps into subterranean water. This illustration from Wikipedia's windcatcher page demonstrates how the windcatcher tech utilizes the qanat system to cool the air:

The Joy of Jacuzzis

JacuzziFor some time the Jacuzzi has been the ultimate symbol of fine living, whether as a final touch of luxury on an exterior terrace or a high quality replacement for a traditional bathtub. A hard day at the office can be almost enjoyable if one can return home and sink into a deep, bubbly bath with a glass of wine or champagne.

Now a new generation of top-notch Jacuzzis is here, bringing with it a whole new level of comfort, luxury - and technology. Modern Jacuzzis include features such as acid green/blue/pink lights on the outside of the tub, futuristic LED headrests, or coasters to light up your cocktail. Colourful lights built into the external waterfalls and underwater bubble dispensers enhance the funky ambience. The wireless thermometer is another useful device, allowing one to set the temperature of the tub from inside the house on a cold night.

JacuzziHowever the most attractive new gadget is the aqua sound Jacuzzi system, which allows the user to enjoy music while relaxing. Available for iPods, CDs and radio, not to mention a waterproof TV set, the speakers are situated above the user’s head for a home-cinema experience. With the practical floating remote control and the option of a feature that will cause the bubbles to move in time to the music, the new and improved Jacuzzi is, without a doubt, the most relaxing bath you’ll ever experience.

A Novel Idea - Properties with libraries

A bibliophile's paradise

Being a bibliophile can be an overwhelming experience. Many sufferers of this most intellectual of afflictions find themselves quickly swamped by the evidence of their addiction. Finding it impossible to jettison their vast collections of children’s and teenage classics, unable to stop themselves from adding to their groaning shelves every time they pass a bookshop, the first to arrive and the last to leave any local book sale, these over-enthusiastic enthusiasts soon develop a storage problem.

It’s just as well that, as the novelist Anthony Powell once observed, books do furnish a room. Some of the finest properties include libraries, fitted with bookcases and shelves that are designed to encourage the reader to spend hours finding the perfect book, before passing a morning or afternoon relaxing in the most comfortable armchair in the house. The actor Richard Burton – a famous bibliophile – transformed one of the largest rooms in his final home in Celigny, Switzerland into a library, even hiring a qualified librarian to install a professional filing system for his massive book collection.

For the discerning client, for whom life cannot be complete without a library, Rimontgó presents a portfolio of exclusive properties, all of which offer formal libraries, complete with bookcases and plenty of room to sit and read in peace and quiet.

When history goes hi-tech

Private TerraceSometimes it seems like a classic ‘either-or’ choice. Do you opt for life in a historic building in a rural area and sacrifice your desire for modern conveniences, or is it better to buy a glossy new city apartment and enjoy the odd weekend in the country?

It’s summertime and, in the picturesque province of Cádiz, the living is easy. Less than 60 kilometres from this delightful area’s eponymous capital lies the beautiful town of Medina Sidonia, a picture perfect location which, in the fifteenth century, was one of Spain’s most important ducal seats. The town has retained its cobbled streets, medieval walls and therefore much of its ancient charm.

Residencia Thebussem in Medina Sidonia is the ideal property purchase for those torn between ancient culture and modern living. Containing four two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments and one three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment extending over three floors, this glorious nineteenth century townhouse has been completely refitted to include every imaginable modern comfort and convenience.

Located in a cobbled street close to the town’s main square, Residencia Thebussem retains its most charming original features: its period wood beams, arches, glasswork, antique doors, atriums and courtyards will seduce any lover of historical architecture, yet it is also fully heat and sound insulated.

These stunning apartments also feature high quality Logos kitchens with Gorenja integrated appliances, while Jacob Delafon and Grohe will supply the bathroom fittings.

Beautiful BedroomPurchasers will be able to enjoy some very contemporary touches, such as an under-floor heating system, air-conditioning and heating in all rooms, plus satellite connections that can be offered for a system suitable to any nationality or language group. All residents will also enjoy access to a private pool terrace, an essential feature during the summer months.

The layout of every apartment is entirely unique, the three-bedroom residence containing some unusual features, such as a tower room, a terrace with superb views and a private entrance leading off a quiet road that overlooks the town’s castle.

Residencia Thebussem offers the best of ancient and modern.

Morocco’s Deep South

Berber with dromedaries in the great sand dunes of Erg Chebbi near the village of Merzouga in the Sahara desert. Southeast Morocco.

Djemaa El Fna - when Marrakech’s iconic square awakes at dusk and transforms into an oriental bedlam, the full stretch of all senses is required. Snake charmers, storytellers, musicians and street entertainers are the actors on this magical stage that is accompanied by the fragrance of numerous food and spice stalls. Marrakech, a city of exotic beauty and enchantment, is the ideal starting point for a sojourn into the thrilling contrasts of Morocco’s Great South.

Southwards, beyond the High Atlas Mountains, the intense, pure light of the pre-Sahara brings out tones of red, brown, ochre and gold contrasted by touches of greenery and an arching canopy of blue. It is in this arid yet beautiful land that many have lost their hearts and fallen in love with proud villages and little oases set within a fantastical landscape.

The brightly painted houses of the Ameln villages are built on the lower slopes of the Djebel El Kest. Ameln valley, Anti-Atlas mountains, Morocco.

This is exotic Morocco, remote and lost in time, a region that yields its treasures to those willing to venture a little further and follow the route to the tranquil Ameln valley in the west or the spectacular Drâa valley south of Ouarzazate with its thousands of date palms. Another ancient route passes spectacular Kasbahs along the southern edge of the High Atlas.

In this land of contrasts, unexpectedly stunning scenery can be waiting round every bend, be it almond blossoms at the end of January turning the region into a sea of flowers or the Dadès and Todra gorges, which make dramatic incisions in the southern foothills of the High Atlas.

The world-famous kasbahs (= fortress) at Aït Benhaddou just south of the High Atlas mountains are under the auspices of the UNESCO. Southern Morocco.

Similarly unforgettable experiences are a stroll through the famous kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, the palmeries of Tamnougalt and Amazrou, or entering the mysterious world of the Sahara, where the giant sand dunes of Erg Chebbi extend like an ocean beyond the frontier town of Erfoud. Once seen, these are sights never forgotten.

Louis Vuitton’s environmental campaign

Moai Rano Raraku Rapa Nui Easter IslandLocated between Chile and Tahiti, Easter Island bears an historical significance disproportionate to its modest size. Best known for its enormous stone statues or Moai, which are thought to commemorate prominent ancestors, Easter Island was ‘discovered’ on Easter Sunday, April 5th 1722 by Dutch navigator, Jakob Roggeveen. Previously its inhabitants knew it as Rapa Nui.

Rapa Nui has suffered greatly, its unenviable reputation as an ecological black spot sealed by the dramatic destruction of its forests. However, with the growth of exotic tourism, it has found popularity among travellers who are not deterred by the thought of the five-and-a-half hour flight from Santiago de Chile. These days the island contains more than 20 restaurants that specifically cater to tourists.

Louis Vuitton, in association with other artistic collaborators, is taking part in a project to preserve the island, the ‘Moai: Journey of Light’ project, and in the creation of a Rapa Nui Foundation in 2009 to preserve the environment, the heritage, culture and sustainable development of the island.

Rongo Rongo TabletFurthermore Vuitton is hoping to honour this civilization during the next Vuitton Exposition by presenting ‘Silent Writings’ (Écritures Silencieuses), original glyphic tablets found on the island itself and, until recently, stored in the Vatican. Along with these artefacts, known as the ‘Rongo Rongo’ tablets, will be sculpture, music and pieces of art from various contemporary artists such as Barbara Kruger, Tracey Emin, Ernesto Neto and Jenny Holzer. The themes mirror those of the ancient Moai with the art pieces ranging from gigantic wall paintings, to poetry, graffiti, and much more.

The Rapa Nui Foundation hopes to provide assistance to the island on both a humane and a cultural level. With a leading brand such as Louis Vuitton in the picture, the profile of this unique island can only benefit from subsequent international publicity.

40 years from the moon

One small step...You may have noticed - as it’s been making the headlines - but this year marks the 40th anniversary of what could be described as mankind’s greatest achievement to date. Sure, it was the by-product of the Cold War, but on July 20 1969 man set foot on the moon for the very first time.

As a species better known for its wars, waste, crime and corruption, we finally had something to be truly proud of - an achievement that would have been unthinkable just a few decades before, and unimaginable before. Reaching the moon was more than simply the progression of science and technology, it represented a stage in the development of humanity itself, creating a watershed between what was before and what would come after.

As Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin padded across the sandy wastes of our planet’s satellite, billions of eyes were following them from the earth - that astonishingly beautiful blue sphere in the middle of a dark and alien void. Standing on the moon and looking back at our world was a profound experience indeed, and one that would irrevocably touch the lives of each and every one of the lunar astronauts. Some turned to religion, some to art, while others trusted in science or campaigned for the preservation of our precious planet, but none found peace after the Apollo missions.

There are those who have attempted to give the space travellers a voice and explain to the rest of us why they were so affected, but somehow the reasons remain hard to fathom. I was fortunate to have interviewed Andrew Smith, the Anglo-American author who spoke to most surviving astronauts at length and who through his book Moondust took us a step closer to understanding the momentous impact of seeing our planet in all its fragile and splendid isolation.

Recently Andrew has been on the BBC, as part of a series dedicated to the moon landings. Parallel to all of this are all the conspiracy theories, which hold that man’s sojourn to the moon was nothing more than a carefully staged publicity stunt shot in a studio like an ordinary science fiction film. While I can’t personally vouch for it I incline to believe that we did enjoy this momentous achievement and could revel in true glory for once. Those who doubt the technological likelihood are happy to accept the existence of satellites or secret weaponry of great sophistication, but at the end of the day none of this is important.

Apollo XI crewNeither is the Cold War connotation. What is important is that we dared to dream of going to the moon at all - and how it made us all drop our pens, guns and other implements for a moment and stare heavenwards in rapt amazement. For once the outer reaches of possibility seemed within our grasp and our petty earthly squabbles seemed utterly provincial. For me, however, the message goes further, and what I really got from Andrew Smith book - and believe the astronauts have been trying to tell us - is that no matter where we venture to boldly explore there is only one earth that nourishes us and from which we have sprung forth - and that this lonely planet is a unique commodity worthy of our every care.

The Jaguar changes its spots

Jaguar XJAs the years pass the environmental concern grows in western societies. We need to do something about the effect we’re having on the environment yet modern technology has made us more dependent than ever on energy. Until more global solutions are found many companies are doing their bit by developing new technologies and making cleaner, more efficient products.

A fine example is the Jaguar XJ 2.7 Diesel, elected greenest car 2009 in Great Britain by the Environmental Transport Association, in which it faced 1,300 competitors. Outperforming any other luxury car according to the EPA director, this environmentally friendly Jag takes home the award for the third year in a row. It was its amazing capacity to run 1,000 miles (1,600 km) with a single tank of fuel that confirmed the easy win in a competition based on power, emissions, fuel efficiency and engine noise.

Jaguar XJCommitted to the environmental project, Geoff Cousins, managing director of Jaguar UK proudly announced that Jaguar will continue to contribute to solutions for the environmental problems that face the planet. Great news for those who love fine cars and care about the environment.

Topsy-turvy season showdown in Valencia

Formula 1 dramaWhether you’re an avid fan or not, this year’s Formula One season has really been eye-catching. In a sport dominated by big guns Ferrari and McLaren this season has seen all prior certainties go up in smoke. In fact, no sooner had we got used to a brand new hierarchy consisting of Brawn Mercedes and Red Bull Renault than the sport was turned upside down again by the awful accident that saw Ferrari’s Felipe Massa out for the season - and perhaps for good.

In the subsequent Grand Prix of Hungary Ferrari eerily started with only one car, and just as the famous team was starting to make inroads. Instead, the race marked the revival of McLaren and reigning champion Lewis Hamilton. The order seems to be changing once again, and now possibly four teams will be lining up in Valencia this August with a real chance to win. Championship leader Jenson Button (Brawn) has lost ground to Messrs. Vettel and Webber (Red Bull), and perhaps a revitalised Hamilton (McLaren).

Michael Schumacher
It promises to be a real showdown, but even as the dust settled around the main protagonists more dramas were played out. Spain’s hero Fernando Alonso incurred the wrath of the sport’s moguls when he drove around the circuit with an unbolted tyre that eventually flew up into the air - evoking memories of the accidents involving Massa and the tragic young Surtees - and earning the Renault team a ban. The fact that the two-time world champion will not be present in Valencia is a big blow, but it has been more than compensated for by the news that none other than Michael Schumacher will be making his return as stand-in for the unlucky Felipe Massa.

Suddenly, Ferrari’s chances are hotly speculated, and the Schumacher-Raikkonen line-up will be doing everything it can to realise them. At any rate, it’s been a long time since we’ve had a showdown like this. Let the show begin…

End Of The Throw-Away Culture

Patchwork

When an appliance breaks, many of us typically used to throw it away, and head off to buy a new one. Similarly, when we got a hole in our jeans, we would head down to the shop and buy a new pair. Whereas this may have been our behaviour a few months ago, the ongoing recession is changing many things about the way we behave. Economising is today the name of the game, and the end of our throw-away culture is near

Do-It-Yourself Broadband

Many communities are opting to go for do-it-yourself broadband schemes, as they get tired of waiting for the bigger operators to bring it to them. Several different schemes are occurring all over the country, ranging from smaller twenty household schemes up to the larger schemes involving half a million households.

Mobile Phone Advancement

NokiaJust a few years ago, mobile phones were exactly as the name implied; phones that you could use on the move. Today however, the mobile phone technology is so far advanced that soon, you could be using your phone for just about anything. Popular mobile phone giant Nokia has developed a system whereby you can control your home heating from your phone. If you are running late and want your house to be warm when you come in; you can adjust the temperatures from your car on the way back. Nokia has plans to incorporate a complete Home control Centre on their mobile phones, so that you can control not only heating, but lights and appliances as well.

First Aid Is A Vital Skill

CPR

First Aid is a very important skill for people to learn. Knowing how to deal with accidents and injuries can make the difference between life and death. It may take a few minutes for an ambulance to arrive at the scene of an accident, and a first aider can do wonders in that time.

Fashion that Multitasks: 1 LBD = 31 Days of High Style

When Seattle artist Alex Martin wore the same brown dress every day for a year - with the added constraint that anything she paired it with such as accessories, shoes or layering pieces was either second-hand in origin or already in her wardrobe - she was one of the first to tap into a nascent trend in a high-profile way. "In this performance," she wrote about her "Little Brown Dress" project which lasted from July 2005 through July 2006, "I challenged myself to reject the economic system that pushes over-consumption," mostly through immense pressure on women to look good by buying immense amounts of new clothing. In May of this year, fashionista Sheena Matheiken launched the "Uniform Project", wearing the same LBD for a year as an exercise in sustainable fashion, while NYC designer Mal Sirrah recently collaborated with over 1000 women around the world on the perfect, universal dress. What has become clear is that there is a movement afoot to reexamine the McTaste factor in ra

Harper's Bazaar Takes a More Unconvential Approach to Beauty

Sept 09 NS Leighton

Although she graces the cover of the September issue as her currently fresh-faced self, in the accompanying spread, Bazaar digitally enhanced Leighton Meester to look 50 in one shot - rendering her an elegantly-aging society doyenne clad in Van Cleef bling, a ruffly Ralph Lauren Blue Label blouse and Louis Vuitton suit. "Any fear of aging, I think, is simply vanity," she remarks in the interview...at 23 still blessed with the short-lived natural beauty that goes with being on the right side of 30. "But I do support Botox. If people want that, do it."

Spark up Gray with Tomato-Red Toes & Matching Bag

Tomato red bag grey gray outfit

Grey may be the new whatever-shade, but avoid overdosing your fall wardrobe straight into a fashion coma by adding spicy pops of hot tamale red on your tips, toes, and arm. This Mulberry Bayswater bag in a papaya-hued croc print is nothing less than mouthwatering, while nails in coordinating YSL "Flaming Orange" add just the right cheery, Rockstar'ish touch.

Fragrance the party in manhattan Destination #1: New York Instead of the typical hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, The Party in Manhattan - available for the first time in the US - transports the wearer to a time of hushed corridors in grand hotels, the foyers of the theaters of Broadway, and private parties filled with decadence. Graduation Presents I

The season for graduation has arrived again, and for some people, this means the end of an era and the beginning of another stage in their lives. It is the custom tocommemorate this special event with a gift. But the usual photoframes and such are so old and not exactly the ideal gift. Here are a few of our ideas of the perfect graduation gifts we would like to recieve:

Ok, lets start with the classics. And what can be more timeless then a watch? Now that they're entering a new stage in their life, upgrade from the plastic watches with a more elegant looking silver band. Like this pink (or is it purple?) Swatch watch or even better yet- this very classical Cartier watch.

Record this special time in their lives with a digital camera, such as my personal favourite- a Canon Powershot 500.

And if they don't have one already, you simply MUST get them an ipod. If you are not sure about which color to get, play it safe and get the silver. They can always change the color with different colored cases!

Everyone needs a bag that they can take everywhere. And what better then this timeless black Vuitton bag that can be worn as a clutch or a shoulder bag. It will match any outfit and is perfect for any occasion, from out for the day to a formal ball.

A new stage in your life deserves a new fagrance. I am loving this sexy, fruity and sophisticated fragrance Baby Doll by YSL.

And we've saved the best for last. The ultimate perfect gift we would like to recieve for graduation, would be our very own Mercedes Convertible!

There's something for everyone. Get them something memorable and meaningly to celebrate their special day or if YOU are the one graduating. . well give them a hint and forward them this blog! LOL ;)

The Desperate Houeswives Fashion: Felicity Huffman

Lynette Scavo, the career woman turned housewife to 4 kids played, by Felicity Huffman. I got to admit, she's not exactly the most fashionable housewife out there. Her style is usually VERY housewife casual and practical (and I guess really rather realistic. I mean, what woman can look amazingly stylish with not one, not two, but FOUR kids AND a household?) But she has her moments.

Looking down at Wisteria Lane during a precious peaceful moment at her household, in a printed blouse and shirt. That printed shirt is actually not bad. Definitely one of her better housewife moments.

Looking pretty good in this spaghetti strap. But of course, everyone's got to look good when confronting a potential threat to their marriage.

Remnants of her uprising executive days I'm sure. Not exactly very flattering or stylish really.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Looking slightly elegant in this poofy strapless dress, although a bit weighed down.

Out of her role, her fashion still isn't exactly very up to par. Here she is in a decidedly unflattering yellow dress that makes her look fat (esp around the waist) at the 16ths Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

At the ABC upfront party. This dress is definitely much more flattering and kind of pretty. . . but in a suburbia kind of way.

The career woman turn desperate housewife with four kids shops at. . . Gap, what better shop for simple and comfortable clothes, AND an one stop shop for your kids as well!. . . Although perhaps she will need to shop at somewhere more sophisticated next season?
